Regular ER Verbs in the Present Tense

All French verbs either end in '-er', '-ir', or -'re'. Approximately 80% of all French verbs end in '-er'.

  • The end of the verb changes depending on who or what is doing the verb.
  • Let's look at 'regarder' (to watch) as an example.

  • First, emove the '-er' ending.
    • regarder'regard-'
  • Now we are left with 'regard-'.
    • This is called the stem, and it never changes.
  • Now you should add the correct ending for the person doing the action.

  • tu regardes - you watch / you are watching (singular)

  • il regarde - he/it watches / he/it is watching
  • elle regarde - she/it watches / she/it is watching

  • ils/elles regardent - they watch
