Marxist historians view the Civil War in the context of class revolution. Revisionists are trying to broaden our understanding of the Civil War.

Marxist historians believe history is a product of class war.

Marxist interpretation

Marxist historians view the Civil War as a battle between merchants and the gentry.
They describe the events as the ‘English Revolution’ rather than a civil war.

Revisionist interpretation

Revisionists argue that we should view the Civil War in a wider context.
They argue it was driven by Charles I and Parliament’s bad relations which had been building for decades.
They also want us to broaden our focus from England and start considering the impact of the Civil War in Scotland and Ireland.
