The Civil War was split between those who supported Charles I, and those who supported Parliament.

Supporting Charles I

People who supported the king were called ‘cavaliers’.
Cavaliers were ‘royalists’ (supported royalty).
At the beginning of the Civil War, the cavaliers were better equipped. In particular, they had good horsemen.
In general, the cavaliers were conservative Protestants and Catholics.
In general, the cavaliers were members of the gentry (wealthy landowners who were below the aristocracy in society).

Supporting Parliament

People who supported Parliament were called ‘roundheads’.
In general, roundheads were merchants who lived in London and the surrounding areas.
- This gave Parliament a source of income.
- As such, the roundheads had more money than the cavaliers.
In general, roundheads were Puritans.
