Oxidation Number Method
Chemistry: IB Diploma Higher Level, topic 6.6.1
Oxidation Number Method
The oxidation number method can be used to determine when a substance has been oxidised or reduced.

Oxidation number method
- Roman numerals are used to represent the oxidation number of the central atom in a molecule.
- The oxidation number has the same absolute value as the oxidation state.
- Oxidation numbers are important to add when naming compounds, for example:
- Copper (I) chloride (CuCl)
- Copper (II) chloride (CuCl2)

Examples
- Further examples are shown in the table above.
