Diagnostic Misconceptions - Converting eV & Joules
Physics: AQA A Level, topic 2.2.9
Converting Between eV and Joules
1 joule is a much, much bigger unit of energy than 1 eV. So the measurement written in joules is going to be much smaller than the measurement in electron volts.
From eV to J
- To convert from eV to J, multiply by 1.6 x 10-19.
From J to eV
- To convert from J to eV, divide by 1.6 x 10-19.

What is 1.89 eV approximately equal to when measured in joules?
What is 3.02 x 10-19 J approximately equal to when measured in electron volts?
In radioactive decay, alpha particles are produced. The kinetic energy of these particles could be given in either joules or eV.
Which of these is a possible pair of equivalent values?
