Term-to-Term Rules (Patterns)

Patterns have terms
Each picture in a pattern is called a term
Term 1 is the first picture
Term 2 is the next picture
Term 3 comes after Term 2

When shapes are added
A term-to-term rule tells you how to get from one term to the next
Sometimes the same number of shapes is added each time
In this example, squares are added each time
So the rule is to add squares

When shapes are multiplied
Sometimes the number of shapes is multiplied each time
In this example, the number of squares doubles each time
So the rule is to multiply by

Continue the pattern
Use the same rule to find the next term
If the rule is to add 3$$ squares, add $$3 more squares to the last term
This gives the next picture in the pattern
