Both question and exclamation marks are commonly used at the end of sentences.

Question Marks

Question Marks

  • Question marks are used to show that a question is being asked.
    • E.g. Why haven't you done your homework?
  • Question marks are not used at the end of sentences with indirect questions:
    • E.g. The teacher asked Selena whether she had done her homework.
Exclamation Marks

Exclamation Marks

  • Exclamation marks are used at the end of sentences to add emphasis.
  • Exclamation marks are used to indicate strong emotions (like surprise, passion, excitement or anger).
  • Exclamation marks can also be used to indicate abrupt shouting or interjections. For example:
    • Hey! Give me back my pencil!
    • I'm so happy to see you!
    • That was the most incredible match!
