Multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000

When multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000, you need to consider your place value. Let's have a look at how I would multiply by 10, 100 and 1,000.

Multiply by 10, 100 and 1,000

Multiply by 10, 100 and 1,000

  • I want to multiply 7,542 by 10, 100 and 1,000.
  • Start by putting 7,542 into a place value grid.
Digits move left

Digits move left

  • When multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000, each digit moves to the left.
  • The digits move to the left because the number will be getting bigger when you multiply by 10, 100 or 1,000.
7,542 × 10 75,420

7,542 × 10 = 75,420

  • When you multiply by 10, all digits move one column to the left.
  • The 'ones' column is filled with a 0.
7,542 × 100 754,200

7,542 × 100 = 754,200

  • When you multiply by 100, all digits move two columns to the left.
  • The 'ones' and 'tens' columns are filled with 0s.
7,542 × 1,000 7,542,000

7,542 × 1,000 = 7,542,000

  • When you multiply by 1,000, all digits move three columns to the left.
  • The 'ones', 'tens' and 'hundreds' columns are filled with 0s.

Dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000

When dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000, you need to consider our place value. Let's have a look at how I would divide by 10, 100 and 1,000.

Divide by 10, 100 and 1,000

Divide by 10, 100 and 1,000

  • I want to divide 7,542 by 10, 100 and 1,000.
  • Start by putting 7,542 into a place value grid.
Digits move right

Digits move right

  • When dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000, each digit moves to the right.
  • The digits move to the right because the number will be getting smaller when you divide by 10, 100 or 1,000.
7,542 ÷ 10 754.2

7,542 ÷ 10 = 754.2

  • When you divide by 10, all digits move one column to the right.
  • Don’t forget your decimal place!
7,542 ÷ 100 75.42

7,542 ÷ 100 = 75.42

  • When you divide by 100, all digits move two columns to the right.
  • Don’t forget your decimal place!
7,542 ÷ 1,000 7.542

7,542 ÷ 1,000 = 7.542

  • When you divide by 1,000, all digits move three columns to the right.
  • Don’t forget your decimal place!
