Waves - Ripple Tank

Science Practicals: GCSE, topic 3.1.9

Example of a Wave

We normally use a ripple tank to observe waves. But Spongebob is a good alternative. A transverse wave causes the particles of the medium (Spongebob) to vibrate at right angles to the direction of the wave’s motion.

Test yourself on Waves - Ripple Tank

  • What is the distance between two wavefronts?

  • A student measures the distance from the peak of a water wave to the trough of a water wave. This distance is 0.80 m. State the amplitude of this water wave.

  • What is the speed of a wave with a frequency of 50Hz and a wavelength of 5m?

  • What is the frequency of a wave with speed 3m/s and wavelength 6m?

  • If a measurement happened for 5 s and a wave's wavelength is 4 mm with a frequency of 2 kHz, what was the distance the measurement happened over?
