Identifying Ions
Science Practicals: GCSE, topic 2.1.11
Flame Tests
Flame tests can identify metal ions. The following positive metal ions all burn with a characteristic colour:

Lithium (Li+)
- Crimson flame.

Sodium (Na+)
- Yellow flame.

Potassium (K+)
- Lilac flame.

Calcium (Ca2+)
- Orange-red flame.

Copper (Cu2+)
- Green flame.
Test yourself on Identifying Ions
Which is the correct flame colour for each metal ion?
Why is it problematic for interpreting the results of a flame test if a sample is made up of multiple ions?
Which is the correct charge for the following metal ions?
In flame tests, what must the nichrome wire loop be submerged in to be cleaned?
In flame tests, what colour must the Bunsen flame before the wire loop is held in it?
