Identifying Gases 2
Science Practicals: GCSE, topic 2.1.10
Identification of Common Gases
Here is a summary of the tests for common gases:

Hydrogen
- Hold a lit splint at the open end of a test tube containing a gas.
- If the gas is hydrogen, a “squeaky pop” sound will be produced.
%208.1.2.2%20-%20test%20for%20oxygen%2C%20smouldering%20splint,w_800.png)
Oxygen
- Insert a glowing splint into a test tube containing a gas.
- If the gas is oxygen, the splint will relight.

Carbon dioxide
- Bubble through, or shake carbon dioxide with, an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide (also called lime water).
- The solution will turn from clear to cloudy.
%208.1.2.4%20-%20test%20for%20chlorine%20gas%20with%20damp%20litmus%20paper,w_800.png)
Chlorine
- Insert damp litmus paper into a test tube containing a gas.
- If the gas is chlorine, the litmus paper will bleach and turn white.
