Adverbs are often formed by adding 'mente' to an adjective. 'Mente' is added to the feminine form of an adjective (when it ends in 'a'). These adverbs are always translated as 'quickly', 'slowly', 'narrowly' etc.

Forming the adverb

  • To form an adverb which ends in 'mente', take the feminine version of the adjective and add 'mente'.
    • Rápido → rápida → rápidamente.
  • When the adjective has an accent, the adverb also has the accent.

  • General → generalmente (generally).
  • Total → totalmente (totally).
  • Completo → completa → completamente (completely).
