The Weaknesses of the US 1

Geographical and Cultural Weaknesses

The US were at a huge disadvantage in the Vietnam War, due to geographical, cultural, political, economic and military reasons, which all came together to cause their failure.

Racism

Americans were foreigners fighting in a strange country, and many had racist attitudes towards the Vietnamese.

Language

They had to use interpreters as they didn’t speak the language, which made it harder to gain support from the locals.

Cultural customs

Most Americans had no idea about the customs and culture of Vietnam and didn’t understand that Vietnamese villagers didn’t want to leave their land where their ancestors were buried.

Literacy

They didn’t realise that most Vietnamese villagers couldn’t read, so dropping leaflets warning them to move out before bombing raids didn’t work.

Political and Economic Weaknesses

The US were at a huge disadvantage in the Vietnam War, due to geographical, cultural, political, economic and military reasons, which all came together to cause their failure.

Distrust of motives

Many South Vietnamese viewed the USA as a foreign occupier imposing ideas, like the French before them.
They did not believe the US was fighting for democracy, despite its claims.

Corruption

The US backed South Vietnamese government was corrupt.
Many officials had worked for the French, making them even more unpopular.

Home opposition

The USA faced opposition at home, both in the form of anti-war protests and restricted funding from Congress after 1971.
