Accommodation
Accommodation of Nazi Rule
Accommodation of Nazi Rule
In some countries, local governments and their people tried to 'accommodate' Nazi rule, by neither fully collaborating nor fully resisting.
Denmark
Denmark
- The Nazis did not overthrow the Danish government.
- In return, the Danes agreed to work with the Germans and adapt their economy and industries to help the German war effort.
- As a result, the Danes could reject the Germans' demands that the Danes discriminate against Danish Jews and the Holocaust was not as felt in Denmark during World War 2.
Monaco
Monaco
- Monaco is a small state in the south of France.
- The Monaco police handed 42 foreign (non-French) Jews to the Nazis and in exchange, Jews living in Monaco were protected.
Accommodation or collaboration?
Accommodation or collaboration?
- To get favourable treatment from the Nazis, both Monaco and Denmark had to allow the Nazis to enact at least some of their agenda.
- So historians disagree about whether this counted as collaboration or accommodation.
