Early Nazi victories and success in Europe

  • A string of early successes helped to maintain the German public's support back home:
    • Between September 1939 and June 1940, the Germany army and German Air Force (the Luftwaffe) invaded Norway, Denmark and Poland.
    • In 1940, Germany managed to invade France, Belgium and Holland, all in the space of 6 weeks (although Belgium and Holland are both quite small geographically).
  • On the 22nd of June 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania had been annexed (seized) by the Soviet Union in the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and were having the Soviet regime imposed on them. They actually welcomed German soldiers invading.

Resurgence of the Allies

  • The fortunes of Germany took a turn for the worse after November 1942.
  • In 1943, the Soviet Red Army managed to re-capture the city of Kiev from German forces.
  • In 1944, British and American forces were gaining control of Europe. On the 25th of August 1944, German troops in Paris surrendered to the Allies.
  • Public morale and support for the war and the Nazi party fell with these defeats.
  • This dissatisfaction led to resistance like Operation Valkyrie.
