Shading & Design

Many of the questions in the non-verbal reasoning paper will require you to look closely at the way in which shapes have been shaded, or the patterns that the shapes contain.

Question

Question

  • Does image A, B, C or D complete the grid?
Start with the first sequence

Start with the first sequence

  • The pattern used to make the sequence in the first line of the grid will help us find the missing image.

Confirm the pattern for third sequence

Confirm the pattern for third sequence

  • We need to confirm that the pattern in the third sequence is the same as the pattern in the first sequence.
Confirm the pattern ✅

Confirm the pattern ✅

  • We see that the third sequence follows the same pattern as the first sequence.
Consider the second sequence

Consider the second sequence

  • Now we use the pattern we found for the other sequences to work out what would complete the grid.
Compare with answers

Compare with answers

  • Image B is the correct answer as it has two shapes with dots, two shapes with lines, and the shapes on the bottom row are unique to the sequence.

  • What is the pattern in the diagonal lines?

  • Does each row have multiple large shapes with the same shading?
