Counting

Many of the questions you will be asked require you to count dots, lines, zig-zags, squares or any other part of an image.

Question

Question

  • Does image A, B, C or D complete the grid?
Start with the first sequence

Start with the first sequence

  • The pattern in the first sequence is the same as the pattern used to complete the grid.

Look for patterns in lines ✅

Look for patterns in lines ✅

  • The first step in the pattern is to lose a vertical line.
  • The second step in the pattern is to lose a horizontal line.
Confirm the pattern for third sequence

Confirm the pattern for third sequence

  • We need to confirm that the pattern in the third sequence is the same as the pattern in the first sequence.
Confirm the pattern ✅

Confirm the pattern ✅

  • We see that the third sequence follows the same pattern as the first sequence.
Consider the second sequence

Consider the second sequence

  • Now we use the pattern of lines decreasing to work out what would complete the grid.
Count the lines

Count the lines

  • Counting the lines in each image will allow us to work backwards to get the initial image in the sequence.
Find the form of the missing image

Find the form of the missing image

  • Using the pattern, we see that the missing image must have three horizontal lines and two vertical lines.
Compare with answers

Compare with answers

  • Shape D is the correct answer as it has three horizonal lines and two vertical lines, completing the sequence.
