Identifying Equivalent Fractions
Some fractions have different denominators (numbers on the bottom), but can be equivalent. This means they describe the same amount.
4⁄8 = 1⁄2
- Count these pizza slices. There are 8 slices in total. So half a pizza is 4 slices.
- The fraction 4⁄8 is the same amount as 1⁄2. We call these equivalent fractions.
Checking equivalent fractions
- You can check that fractions are equivalent by simplifying them.
- To simplify 4⁄8, find the largest number that you can divide both 4 and 8 by (the largest common factor).
- The largest common factor is 4.

Simplify 4⁄8
- So to simplify 4⁄8, divide both 4 and 8 by 4.

Simplest form = 1⁄2
- So the simplest form of 4⁄8 is 1⁄2.
- This means 4⁄8 and 1⁄2 are equivalent fractions.
