Key Terms in AI
Before we delve into the applications of AI in education, it's important to define a few key terms.
Artificial Intelligence
- AI refers to the ability of a computer to complete tasks that humans can do.
Generative AI
- The use of AI to generate new content (text, image, sound etc) based on previous data.
Algorithm
- The rules or instructions that computers need to follow to achieve a goal or solve a problem. (Akgun & Greenhow, 2022)
Prompt
- The prompts are the instructions (or queries or questions) we give to AI (eg. ChatGPT) for it to respond to.
Language models
- AI that can predict the next best word after a given word, based on the context.
- It uses its training dataset of texts to create a probabilistic distribution of possible words, and then picks the best one according to grammar and semantics.
