- Ireland was ruled by the British but many did not want this and preferred the idea of independence.

- There was a rise in Irish Fenian groups who were campaigning for this separation.
- As a result of the rise of Fenian groups, there were bombs and explosions in the local area.
Gangs in Whitechapel

- Gangs were also a problem.
- Many criminal gangs ran protection rackets often targeting the Jewish businesses in Whitechapel.
- These rackets targeted groups that already feared the authorities and were unlikely to challenge them.
