Key quote - Poole
Here is the key quote from Mr Poole:

- "O, sir...do you think I do not know my master after twenty years? Do you think I do not know where his head comes to in the cabinet door, where I saw him every morning of my life? No, sir, that thing in the mask was never Dr Jekyll."
- Poole is loyal and has worked for Jekyll for over two decades
- He is the one that notices when Jekyll’s behaviour starts to change, so he notifies Utterson for help.
Key quote - Mr Enfield
Here is a key quote from Mr Enfield, after he and Mr Utterson pass a “sinister block of building” that looks different from the rest.

- Enfield tells Utterson that he once “saw two figures: one a little man who was stumping along eastward at a good walk, and the other a girl of maybe eight or ten who was running as hard as she was able down a cross street.” (1)
- This strange recount of events starts the investigation into Hyde, and invokes Utterson’s curiosity.
Key quote - Mr Guest
Here is a key quote from Mr Guest, when he compares the handwriting of a letter written by Hyde with that of an invitation sent by Jekyll:

- "Well, sir...there's a rather singular resemblance; the two hands are in many points identical: only differently sloped.” (5)
- Utterson locks the letter into his safe that night, and thinks "Henry Jekyll forge for a murderer!" His blood runs cold in his veins.
