Here is an example of explanatory writing. How does the writer use language in this example to explain why they like the specific spot along Albert Docks?

One of my favourite places is a specific spot along the Albert Docks in Liverpool. Most people would look at this spot and see a crowded spot beside murky water. However, I don’t see that when I stand in that one spot.

I suppose the main reason I like that spot so much is because it is in the centre of a busy city but, when I stand there, I feel peaceful. Somehow, the noise of the masses are blocked out; instead, I hear the lapping of the water against the old brick walls of the dock.

If you think the city centre is an odd place to find peace, there are others who seem to share my choice of special spot. Last summer, for instance, the whole area was full of people standing and sitting, reading and chatting, quiet and laughing, just seeming to be happy and at peace in the midst of the chaos around them.

It is easy to get lost in the madness of life – but being at that point, next to the water, where I can stare out towards the Irish Sea, reminds me to take a step back and appreciate my life. Being at my favourite spot allows me to slow down and spot the little things that make my life good.
And there are a lot of them.
