- The terms of the Panmunjon Armistice agreement stated that:
- There would be a military demarcation line at the 38th parallel, and a demilitarised zone of 2 kilometres on either side of the 38th parallel.
- There was a requirement that all military forces withdraw to their own countries.
- All prisoners of war must be set free and allowed to return to their homeland.
The Impact of the Korean War
The Impact of the Korean War
- The security of both the North and South of Korea was protected after the war.
- The USA also issued a long-term guarantee of security of Taiwan to prevent a similar situation occurring between Taiwan and China in the future.
- Before Stalin died in March 1953, he turned his attention away from the war to the rapid industrialisation of the USSR and Soviet Bloc.
- This caused shortages in Eastern European countries and the reduction of consumer goods. The west believed the lack of goods would help some parts of Eastern Europe to become anti-communist.
