The Limitations of Working Memory
Now that you know more about cognitive load effects and the limitations of working memory, here are a few things to apply (or not!) in class.

Do
Do
- Identify what is, and what is not, key to your instructions.
- Cut extraneous cognitive load. In other words, cut what doesn’t aid learning.
- Study the cognitive load effects mentioned earlier.
- Explore how dual coding can support working memory.

Don't
Don't
- Clutter your slides and documents with too much content.
- Arrange the content randomly. It is better to group related points.
- Make it all too easy. This is because intrinsic load needs hard thinking.
- Use too many colours in your documents and slides. It is better to keep it clean.

Try
Try
- Check yourself against the cognitive load effects.
- Keep in mind the novice–expert continuum.
- Use more direct instruction at topic beginnings.
- Plan your instructional statements.
- Visualise the worked example processes.
