The area of a shape is the space enclosed within it. You need to be able to calculate the area of some 2D shapes.

Square

  • Area of a square = base × height
    • Because a square has four sides of equal length, we can say that area is equal to L², where L is the length of each side.

Parallelogram

Parallelogram

  • Area of a parallelogram = base × height
    • The 'height' isn't actually a side length - it is the vertical distance from top edge to bottom edge.
Trapezium

  • Area of a trapezium = 12\frac{1}{2}(a+b) × height
    • a and b are the two parallel sides. The height is the vertical distance from top edge to bottom edge.
Triangle

Triangle

  • Area of a triangle = 12\frac{1}{2} × base × height
    • In the example here, the area would be calculated like this:
      • Area = 12\frac{1}{2} × 7 cm × 10 cm
      • Area = 35 cm2
