Formula Triangles

Formula triangles show the relationship between different units (e.g. speed, distance and time).

Triangle

Triangle

  • To find the quantity on the top row we multiply the two bottom quantities together (e.g. distance = speed × time).
  • To find a quantity on the bottom row we divide the top quantity by the other bottom one (e.g. speed = distance ÷ time).
Speed

Speed

  • Speed is the distance travelled per unit of time.
  • Common units for speed are kilometres per hour (km/h), miles per hour (miles/h or mph) and metres per second (m/s).
Pressure

Pressure

  • Pressure is force acting per unit of area.
  • Common units for pressure are N/m2 or pascals (Pa).
Density

Density

  • Density is the mass per unit of volume.
  • Common units for density are kg/m3 and g/cm3.
