Victor finds himself accused of a murder, but finding out who the victim is proves to be even more distressing.

- A man has been found strangled.
- Witnesses testify against Victor, claiming that before the body was found they saw another man in a similar boat to Victor's.
- Victor is shown the body and realises that it is Clerval.
- Victor falls into a long illness.

- After two months in a fever, Victor recovers and finds that he is in prison.
- Mr Kirwin, the magistrate, is now much kinder towards Victor and had written to his family in Geneva whilst he was ill.
- Mr Kirwin informs Victor that he has a visitor, but Victor assumes it will be the Monster.

- Victor is overjoyed to see that the visitor is his father, whose appearance he sees as that of a guardian angel.
- Victor recovers more and is found innocent of Clerval's murder.
- Victor returns to Geneva with his father, but continues to find sleeping difficult.

As plans for Victor's wedding to Elizabeth get underway, Victor becomes more and more troubled by the Monster's promise to return on his wedding night.

- Victor receives a letter from Elizabeth, who is worried about Victor's ill health and asks if he has fallen in love with someone else.
- Victor replies with a loving letter, telling her that he will share his darkest secret with her the day after they are married.

- When Alphonse and Victor arrive back in Geneva, they begin planning Victor's wedding.
- As the day approaches, Elizabeth is very excited but Victor worries about what the Monster had said.
- Victor believes that the Monster plans to kill him and states that he does not fear death.

- Victor arms himself with daggers and pistols in preparation for the Monster's attack.
- The wedding takes place and Victor and Elizabeth head off to Villa Lavenza on the shores of Lake Como.

The Monster fulfils his promise with devastating consequences on Victor and Elizabeth's wedding night.

- Victor tells Elizabeth to retire for the night, worrying that she will be upset by the battle he anticipates having with the Monster.
- Victor hears Elizabeth scream and rushes back into the bedroom to find her dead.
- Victor falls senseless to the ground.
- When he recovers, he sees the mark of the Monster's fingers across Elizabeth's neck.
- He looks up and sees the jeering face of the Monster and tries, unsuccessfully, to shoot him.
The aftermath

- Victor returns to Geneva to tell his father the news.
- Alphonse suffers such great shock that he dies a few days later.
- Victor goes to a magistrate in Geneva to tell them his tale and hopes they will apprehend the Monster.
- Victor sees that the magistrate does not believe him.
- Victor vows to devote himself to destroying the Monster.
