Ferrous Metals
Design & Technology: AQA GCSE, topic 4.1.2
Ferrous Metals
Ferrous metals are metals that contain iron.

Properties of ferrous metals
- Ferrous metals are magnetic and will rust when exposed to unfavourable conditions.
- Small amounts of other compounds or metals can be added to enhance the properties of ferrous metals.
- For example, adding small amounts of carbon can increase its hardness.

Examples of ferrous metals
- Low-carbon steel can increase the toughness of steel.
- Low-carbon steel is used for bike frames.
- High-carbon steel can keep sharp and does not rust easily.
- High-carbon steel is used for tools such as knives or scissors.
- Cast iron can make strong and tough products.
- Cast iron is used for kitchen pans.
