Timber: Modification of Materials
Design & Technology: AQA GCSE, topic 3.5.2
Modification of Materials
The modification of properties for specific purposes.

Qualities
- Woods must be altered whilst retaining or enhancing original qualities.
- Without this wood would be replaced by other materials such as plastic.

Seasoning
- Woods need to be seasoned to ensure they are fit for purpose and can withstand the environment that they are in.
- Timbers are cut down and then the modification can begin.
- The seasoning of the wood is usually done through a kiln drying.

Kiln drying
- Kiln drying involves circulating heat and pressure to release the moisture from the wood.
- The moisture that is left is what determines its future use.
- A lower percentage of moisture in the wood enables the wood to be used indoors or in hot conditions.
