Looped Systems

Design & Technology: AQA GCSE, topic 1.4.4

Open Looped and Closed Looped Systems

Electronic systems can be open looped or closed looped.

Open looped systems

Open looped systems

  • The input controls the output.
  • There is no feedback.
Open looped

Open looped

Example: toaster

Example: toaster

  • Example a toaster:
    • There is no feedback.
    • The bread will pop up after a set time even if the toast is not brown enough.
Closed looped systems

Closed looped systems

  • The input controls the output.
  • There is a feedback loop which enables the system to make a decision.
  • This usually uses a sensor.
Closed loop

Closed loop

Example: kettle

Example: kettle

  • Example a kettle:
    • There is feedback.
    • A sensor will continue to detect the heat and input into the process until the water reaches a certain temperature when the kettle will turn off.

Test yourself on Looped Systems

  • Is this an open or closed looped system?
