MARGE and SQ3R
Shimamura discusses the link between MARGE and other study tools, including the SQ3R method. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review.

S: Survey
- Survey or skim the text, taking note of the main headings and features, and summary paragraphs. This should only take three to five minutes.

Q: Question
- Generate questions about what has been read: What is the text about? What am I trying to learn by reading this text?

R: Read
- Using information from S and Q, engage in active reading, allowing the questions generated in Q to be answered.

R: Recite
- From memory, recite the information that has been learned through reading and answering the questions from Q.

R: Review
- At the end of each section, review the text, repeating back the key points from each section in your own words. This entire process then repeats.
The Links Between MARGE and SQ3R

Surveying and motivation
- Surveying the text allows students to see the big picture, which has links to motivation.

Questions and attention
- Questions being created allow the engagement of top-down processing, focussing attention on key chunks of information.

Reciting and generation
- Reciting information allows the generation of links between knowledge and the movement of it to long-term memory through the process of elaboration and practice.

Reviewing and Evaluation
- Reviewing what has been learned allows the evaluation of learning to take place, through effective metacognitive strategies.
