Tips for Home Study
Here are suggestions Patrice shares with parents.

Designated spot
Designated spot
- Patrice has found that it is helpful for students to have their “go-to” place for schoolwork.
- It is important to have an established place with tools and supplies readily available.

Distractions
Distractions
- Research shows that people aren’t capable of thinking two different thoughts at the same time, or multitasking.
- Because this toggling back and forth affects our working memory, both tasks suffer.
- As Blake Harvard states: Task-switching is a much less effective and efficient way to learn and study.

Routine
Routine
- Parents define the routine that works best for their family. Perhaps the child comes home; perhaps they go elsewhere.
- The key is establishing the routine.
- The advice Patrice gives to parents is having: 1) a plan, and 2) a timer.

Calendar
Calendar
- Having a family calendar can really help in planning ahead.
- This is also a good place to post the dates when projects or big assignments are due.
- These visual aids on the calendar provide reminders to add chunks of time to the routine to work on those projects.
