Bishop Odo was William's regent when he was away in Normandy. Odo was also William's half brother and the Earl of Kent.

- In Normandy, he was the was bishop of Bayeux.
- Odo of Bayeux fought alongside William in the Battle of Hastings.
- His support in Normandy and in battle led him to become the Earl of Kent.

- However, William I imprisoned his half-brother, Odo of Bayeux in 1082.
- This was because he had assembled an army without the king's permission.
- He had wanted to defend the pope against Henry IV (Holy Roman Emperor).
- William wanted no challenges to his royal authority.

- Bishop Odo of Bayeux is thought to be responsible for paying for the commission of the Bayeux Tapestry.
- The Bayeux Tapestry is a mural with embroidery showing the events of the Battle of Hastings.
