How to find the number of parts

Example farm ratio problem

The ratio of cows to sheep on a farm is 2:3. I have 500 animals in total.
- How many cows are there and how many sheep?

1) Work out the number of parts

2) Divide number of animals by parts

Divide the total number of animals by the total number of parts to find out how many animals there are in each equal part.

3) Multiply ratios by 100

Multiply 100 (the number of animals in each part) by each side of the ratio to find the numbers of cows and sheep.

Write the answers

There are 200 cows and 300 sheep.
