# MARGE & SQ3R

CPD: MARGE Model for Learning (by Nimish Lad), topic 1.3.4

## MARGE and SQ3R

Shimamura discusses the link between MARGE and other study tools, including the SQ3R method. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review.

### S: Survey

![S: Survey](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-02/df4e8b32-ba96-4ec5-af11-f0335acf102a/hand-write-pen-survey-checklist-min.jpg)

- Survey or skim the text, taking note of the main headings and features, and summary paragraphs. This should only take three to five minutes.

### Q: Question

![Q: Question](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/courseImages/chemistry/2.3.4%20Nanotechnology/question-mark-2492009_640-min.jpg)

- Generate questions about what has been read: What is the text about? What am I trying to learn by reading this text?

### R: Read

![R: Read](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-11/9f8980a0-f4dc-43e8-8e6c-5835fad2fea5/woman-read-magazine-.jpg)

- Using information from S and Q, engage in active reading, allowing the questions generated in Q to be answered.

### R: Recite

![R: Recite](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-08/fec347c9-b23a-4dcd-87eb-91c3bda2ee57/speech-giving-speech-.jpg)

- From memory, recite the information that has been learned through reading and answering the questions from Q.

### R: Review

![R: Review](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-09/86f41844-219d-4d5d-9f5d-8769467e10f9/read-pray-hebrew-.jpg)

- At the end of each section, review the text, repeating back the key points from each section in your own words. This entire process then repeats.

## The Links Between MARGE and SQ3R

Shimamura discusses the link between MARGE and other study tools, including the SQ3R method. SQ3R stands for Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review.

### Surveying and motivation

- Surveying the text allows students to see the big picture, which has links to motivation.

### Questions and attention

![Questions and attention](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-07/5a32a617-15aa-4b79-bf41-72065d4b3ed8/questions-.jpg)

- Questions being created allow the engagement of top-down processing, focussing attention on key chunks of information.

### Reading and related

![Reading and related](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-07/cd7f57d3-e83e-40a3-b66c-a8d152b4d610/christian.boy.jpg)

- When reading the text, information should be related to existing knowledge, building meaning.

### Reciting and generation

![Reciting and generation](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-09/3aecadc5-a6d0-4f74-8076-a0b56ec23bd0/step-by-step-repeat-until-computational-thinking-.png)

- Reciting information allows the generation of links between knowledge and the movement of it to long-term memory through the process of elaboration and practice.

### Reviewing and Evaluation

![Reviewing and Evaluation](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-11/640fbeae-0c8b-4cb8-b02a-4a425a17a345/review-feedback-.jpg)

- Reviewing what has been learned allows the evaluation of learning to take place, through effective metacognitive strategies.

## Test yourself on MARGE & SQ3R

- Which part of MARGE does surveying link to?
- Which of these options from the SQ3R method is linked to 'related' from the MARGE method?
- Match up the links below.
