# Method D - Partitioning Method

CPD for Primary: Subtraction Methods for KS2 Maths (by Jo Morgan), topic 2.1.4

## Partitioning Method: 753 − 491

### Step 1

![Step 1](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-04/9dd9e4fb-b227-485a-a230-9b5d7c7a0df4/Method%20D%20-%20Example%201.png)

- Partition the subtrahend.

### Step 2

![Step 2](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-05/76d02ba0-c8d4-47ae-8be7-4154b0639659/Copy%20of%20Method%20D%20-%20Example%202%20(1).png)

- Subtract the subtrahend in parts.
- Start by subtracting 400 from 753.

### Step 3

![Step 3](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-04/a7a5561d-4c4a-44bb-9c1b-5b765527628e/Method%20D%20-%20Example%201%20(2).png)

- Now, subtract 90 from 353.
- If that’s too difficult, then split 90 into 50 + 40.
- First, subtract 50.

### Step 4

- Then subtract 40.

### Step 5

- Finally, subtract 1 from 263.

## Test yourself on Method D - Partitioning Method

- **Example question: Use the Partitioning Method to calculate 64726 - 17635. **Which student has correctly partitioned the subtrahend?
- **Example question: Use the Partitioning Method to calculate 64726 - 17635. **Which student has correctly carried out step 2 of the Partitioning Method?
- **Example question: Use the Partitioning Method to calculate 64726 - 17635. **Which student has most logically split the calculation 54726 − 7000?
