# Method E - Counting-Up Method

CPD: A Compendium of Mathematical Methods (By Jo Morgan), topic 2.1.5

## Counting-Up Method: 753 - 491

### Step 1

![Step 1](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-04/831e651d-0428-42ba-b913-41a6d78696bd/Method%20C%20-%20Example%201.png)

- Write out the subtrahend under the minuend.

### Step 2

![Step 2](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-04/7298a621-0b75-46b3-9d9a-ed7fa69a9b3e/Method%20C%20-%20Example%201%20(1).png)

- Work out what we need to add to 491 to get 753. Do this in stages.
- First we can add 9 to 491. This gives 500.

### Step 3

![Step 3](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-04/e2763847-0f38-498f-a925-e3ebe22ff4e6/Method%20C%20-%20Example%201%20(2).png)

- At each stage, write what you’ve added and keep a running total so you know when you’ve reached 753.
- Next, we add 200 to 500. This gives 700.

### Step 4

![Step 4](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-04/03e6f982-7b0a-4707-af5b-fe190b19a73f/Method%20C%20-%20Example%201%20(3).png)

- Next, add 50 to 700. This gives 750.

### Step 5

![Step 5](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-04/1fb7cd12-2ee2-47fc-9847-075a6a39d7d5/Method%20C%20-%20Example%201%20(4).png)

- Next, add 3 to 750. This gives 753 as required.

### Step 6

![Step 6](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-04/e83180bf-34df-423f-91ed-bde44ddac0aa/Method%20C%20-%20Example%201%20(5).png)

- Now sum the numbers you added to 491.

### Checking the answer

![Checking the answer](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-04/e83180bf-34df-423f-91ed-bde44ddac0aa/Method%20C%20-%20Example%201%20(5).png)

- If 491 + 262 = 753 then 753 − 491 = 262.
