# Factors

Maths: Year 3 & 4 National Curriculum, topic 5.3.5

## Factors

A factor is a number which divides exactly into another number without any remainders.

### Example: factors of 10

![Example: factors of 10](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-08/719adb52-28dd-4402-9f23-527277c981e2/number-ten-.jpg)

- The factors of 10 are all the numbers that 10 can be divided by with no remainders.
- 1 is a factor of 10. 10 ÷ 1 = 10
- 10 is a factor of 10. 10 ÷ 10 = 1
- 2 is a factor of 10. 10 ÷ 2 = 5
- 5 is a factor of 10. 10 ÷ 5 = 2

### Factors come in pairs

![Factors come in pairs](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-11/e74981c0-3bec-4d09-804f-30eaebb6775d/2-two-number-.jpg)

- Factors can be found by finding two numbers that multiply to make a number.
- E.g. 2 × 5 = 10
 - 2 and 5 are both factors of 10.
- E.g. 1 × 10 = 10
 - 1 and 10 are both factors of 10.

### Factors come in pairs 2

![Factors come in pairs 2](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-07/1311bffd-2517-40f9-9b07-bf10bc8fca9b/-2-two-.jpg)

- You can think of factors in pairs.
- 2 and 5 are a factor pair of 10 because 2 × 5 = 10.
- 1 and 10 are a factor pair of 10 because 1 × 10 = 10.

## Factor Bugs

Factor bugs are a fun way to find all the factor pairs of a number. The legs of a factor bug show you the factor pairs.

### Find the first factor pair

![Find the first factor pair](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-08/a757766d-8d80-446a-b021-6014aee19e29/Slides%20(56).png)

- The first factor pair is always 1 and the number you're finding factors for.
- The first factor pair is 1 and 24 because 1 × 24 = 24.

### Find the next factor

![Find the next factor](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-08/6520e68a-e42f-4676-8a8c-a4c34aeef6d4/Slides%20(55).png)

- Next, work out if 2 is a factor of 24.
- 2 × 12 = 24
- So 2 and 12 is the next factor pair of 24.

### Find the next factor

![Find the next factor](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-08/b672ba87-07f4-4454-8cdf-ee59859495ed/Slides%20(57).png)

- Next, work out if 3 is a factor of 24.
- 3 × 8 = 24
- So 3 and 8 is the next factor pair of 24.

### Find the next factor

![Find the next factor](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-08/a58da7d8-d156-40c8-adf4-986c02bf16e3/Slides%20(58).png)

- Next, work out if 4 is a factor of 24.
- 4 × 6 = 24
- So 4 and 6 is the next factor pair of 24.

### Find the next factor

![Find the next factor](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-08/a58da7d8-d156-40c8-adf4-986c02bf16e3/Slides%20(58).png)

- Next, work out if 5 is a factor of 24.
- 5 is NOT a factor of 24 because there is no whole number that you can multiply 5 by to get 24.
- Next, work out if 6 is a factor of 24.
- You already know 6 is a factor of 24 because 4 × 6 = 24.

### The factors of 24

![The factors of 24](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-08/a58da7d8-d156-40c8-adf4-986c02bf16e3/Slides%20(58).png)

- You know you have all the factors of a number when you reach a number that you already know is a factor (6 in this example)
- We can say that the factors of 24 are 1, 24, 2, 12, 3, 8, 4 and 6.

### Using factor pairs

![Using factor pairs](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2020-08/8d4d4804-b9b4-44a7-8d1f-72fa04cc9178/Screenshot%202020-08-05%20at%2017.54.46-min.png)

- With factor pairs, we know that when we are multiplying we can use them both ways round.
- For example, 5 × 6 = 30 and 6 × 5 = 30

## Test yourself on Factors

- What factor of 15 pairs with 3?
- Which factor of 24 pairs with 6?
- Is 5 a factor of 16?
- Is 3 a factor of 21?
- What number should be opposite 8 on the factor bug?
