# The Spanish Civil War, 1936-39

History: Cambridge International GCSE The Twentieth Century (Option B), topic 3.3.1

## The Spanish Civil War, 1936-39: Clash of Ideologies

The Spanish Civil War (1936-39) was a key conflict between far-right nationalists and communism, with international powers influencing Spain's future and the start of WWII.

### Causes and ideologies

![Causes and ideologies](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-08/fec347c9-b23a-4dcd-87eb-91c3bda2ee57/speech-giving-speech-.jpg)

- The Spanish Civil War began in 1936 due to political tensions in Spain.
- Far-right nationalists, led by General Franco, opposed the Republican communists and socialists.
- Liberal democracy aimed to preserve a parliamentary system but struggled against dictators.
 - The war reflected the global struggle between fascism and communism.

### Franco and the Nationalists

- General Francisco Franco led the Nationalists against the Republicans.
 - Franco promoted far-right nationalists ideas and sought a military dictatorship.
- The Nationalists received vital support from Italy and Germany.
- Franco aimed to unify Spain under authoritarian rule.

### Role of Germany and Italy

- Germany sent about 16,000 troops and weapons to support Franco.
- Italy contributed around 70,000 soldiers and strong air power.
- Hitler and Mussolini wanted to test their military forces before World War II.
- German and Italian aid gave the Nationalists a significant advantage in the war.

### The USSR and the Republicans

![The USSR and the Republicans](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-03/ad9e7fbe-db4d-411e-929d-cb29187b2275/shutterstock_250624096.jpg)

- The Soviet Union provided weapons and advisers to the Republican side.
 - The USSR aimed to prevent fascist expansion and spread communism.
- The Republicans also received help from international brigade volunteers.
- Despite aid, Republicans lacked the scale of support the Nationalists had.

### Britain and France

![Britain and France](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-07/3a28fe91-7b61-4b9e-a6e9-07ac52527315/Good-Evil-Tattoo-Hand-Fingers.jpg)

- Britain and France chose a policy of non-intervention during the conflict.
 - Both feared the war would escalate into a wider European conflict.
- British and French neutrality limited Republican access to resources and aid.
- This policy favoured the Nationalist side indirectly.

### Impact on WWII

![Impact on WWII](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-04/bdb77e8f-9b8b-48b7-87c6-3f07d7c91e6a/shutterstock_237230146.jpg)

- Franco's victory in 1939 strengthened fascism in Europe.
- Hitler used Spain as a testing ground for tactics later used in WWII.
 - Franco's win boosted Hitler's confidence in military expansion.
- The war showed how ideological conflicts foreshadowed global war.
