It is possible to test for starch stored in leaves. ### Boil ![Boil](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-04/90ced5a8-b052-48ca-91af-daf0bee0fa51/shutterstock_707712688.jpg) - Boil a leaf to denature the enzymes and halt photosynthesis. ### Ethanol ![Ethanol](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-04/ccbde529-d52f-47da-b496-7dda1eb463eb/shutterstock_344934095.jpg) - Soak the leaf in ethanol to remove the green chlorophyll from the leaf, turning it white. ### Iodine ![Iodine](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-04/0c93d6e3-690d-46b7-b28e-8740695e6c43/shutterstock_689683309.jpg) - Add droplets of iodine onto the leaf. - The iodine will turn dark blue in the parts of the leaf where starch is present. ### Altering starch content ![Altering starch content](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-04/6fbf7296-0bb2-4780-89a6-f98581df5b57/shutterstock_525822058.jpg) - The starch content of leaves can be changed. - For example, keeping plants in the dark would decrease the rate of photosynthesis.
