She describes her cries as ‘possessive’ because they take her mother's attention away from her past life. ## The Past Duffy uses several techniques to create a vivid memory of her mother's past, as imagined by her, in _Before You Were Mine_. ### Excitement ![Excitement](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-03/cac762b9-0e95-40f1-80fa-e3765cf10d61/shutterstock_270907925.jpg) - The narrator describes her mother with exciting and glamorous language. For example: - ‘sparkle and waltz’. - ‘stamping stars’. - ‘high-heeled red shoes’. - ‘Your polka-dot dress blows round your legs. Marilyn’. - There is also a lot of vivid, sensory imagery – which helps to bring these memories to life.
