He is determined that he can hunt and provide meat for the boys. ### Hunting ![Hunting](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-01/7e7531ee-d065-4988-b4b5-85308bc56b99/wild-pig-boar-animal-forest-.jpg) - After making a sharpened stick to hunt with, Jack tries to find a pig to kill. - We see the first hint of Jack losing his sense of humanity as he is __“bent double”__, has __“his face a few inches away”__ from the ground, and moves in a __“dog-like”__ way. - Already, Jack’s determination to kill a pig has become an obsession. - Jack hears a pig and throws his sharpened stick at it, but misses. ### Building shelter ![Building shelter](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-01/d106ed1d-bde8-4359-9304-c3b5260c805e/branch-shelter-boy-play-hut-.jpg) - Back on the beach, Ralph and Simon are trying to build shelters by putting leafy branches against tree trunks. - Ralph becomes frustrated at how little progress they are making. - He says the __“littleuns”__ are useless and the older boys are just playing. ### Play ![Play](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-01/e05d58db-f1ec-4cc0-b7e2-cd8b5be821dc/wild-boar-pigs-forest-.jpg) - After Ralph points out the Jack’s hunters are just playing around, Jack says he allowed them to stop hunting. - He thought that he could hunt alone and kill some pigs. ### Determination ![Determination](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-09/847a792f-ac32-4905-926d-45f46c3b1d74/eye-watch-.jpg) - Jack gets angry at Ralph after Ralph tells him to help them build shelters because his hunting has been useless. - Jack is determined that he can hunt and provide meat for the boys. - A __“madness”__ comes into his eyes as his determination to kill grows. ## Hunting or Hunted? Ralph is irritated that Jack is becoming obsessed with the pigs. He wants them to focus on building shelters and creating a good signal fire. ### Dark omens ![Dark omens](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-01/d106ed1d-bde8-4359-9304-c3b5260c805e/branch-shelter-boy-play-hut-.jpg) - Simon tells them that the other boys are __“frightened”__ that the island is bad. - Ralph argues that the shelters are important because the boys are scared of the beast.
