# Chapters 3 & 4

English Lit: AQA GCSE Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, topic 1.1.2

## Chapter 3: Dr Jekyll was Quite at Ease

Here's a summary of what happens in Chapter 3:

### Utterson quizzes Jekyll

![Utterson quizzes Jekyll](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-04/c98c85dc-2b18-4cec-991f-8c46db64416b/shutterstock_311309201.jpg)

- Two weeks later, Jekyll throws a lavish dinner party. Utterson stays late so that the two men can speak privately.
- Utterson mentions the will, and Jekyll begins to make a joke about it, but he soon turns pale when Utterson tells him that he has been **“learning something of young Hyde.”**

### Jekyll defends Hyde

- Jekyll explains that Hyde’s situation is unique and cannot be solved by talking. He also insists that the **“moment I choose I can be rid of Mr Hyde.”**
- Jekyll then forces Utterson to promise him that he will carry out his will and give all belongings to Hyde if he should die.

## Chapter 4: The Carew Murder Case

Here's a summary of what happens in Chapter 4:

### Maid's testimony

![Maid's testimony](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-04/6cd9b82b-1fbe-4c93-acc7-8fc0fa63b864/shutterstock_579241066.jpg)

- Almost a year later, a terrible crime takes place. A maid witnesses everything.
- She sees Hyde wildly beat an old man (Carew) with his foot, and then with a cane.
- The maid faints in shock at the sound of Mr Carew's bones cracking on the ground.

### Police visit

![Police visit](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-04/2a6e2a83-3c3b-462c-b45b-9eae5f47bbe1/shutterstock_720071056.jpg)

- Mr Utterson, Carew’s lawyer, accompanies a police officer to the crime scene.
- He recognises the body as Sir Danvers Carew and the broken walking stick as one that he gave to Dr Jekyll some years before.
 - This is another clue that links Hyde to Jekyll, so Mr Utterson takes the police to Hyde’s house.
- A silver-haired woman answers and says that Hyde is not in the house and that they are not allowed into his rooms.

### Inspecting Hyde's room

![Inspecting Hyde's room](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-04/4b6e8e89-4a3b-4c87-a82d-cce2df3bcd1e/shutterstock_424331113.jpg)

- Utterson tells the lady that an Inspector from Scotland Yard (head of police) is with him, and the woman eventually lets them up.
- In Hyde’s room, Utterson notices that there are ashes in the fireplace. This indicates that Hyde has burned some documents and has made a quick exit, leaving his clothes strewn all over the floor.
- Utterson finds two more pieces of evidence that suggest that Hyde murdered Carew: the other half of the walking stick and a burnt cheque book. Utterson is determined to find Hyde.
