# Minor Characters

English Lit: AQA GCSE Blood Brothers, topic 3.9.1

## Minor Characters

Minor characters serve to show the audience something about society or other characters.

### The Policeman

![The Policeman](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-08/871ab832-64c0-4b73-bf1d-aeb92c57b106/Detective-inspector-man-secret-police-.jpg)

- Russell makes it very clear that the police use different approaches when it comes to dealing with people from different classes (favouring the elite).
 - For example, when the children are in trouble for throwing stones through windows, the Policeman first visits Mrs. Johnstone and tells her that **“there’ll be no more bloody warnings from now on”** (Act One), before visiting Mr. Lyons and respectfully advising him that Edward shouldn’t **“mix with the likes of them in the future”** (Act One).

### The Judge

![The Judge](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-07/9f3ba314-5ac9-4524-bad8-48d3f0ebe837/Judge-Gavil-Trial-Court-Wig-.jpg)

- Similar to the police, the judge is supposed to represent impartial authority, but that is not the case.
- The judge is portrayed as a humorous and unfair character as he lets Sammy off with a light sentence when Mrs. Johnstone flirts with him.
- Again, this suggests that people in authority can’t be trusted to be impartial.

### The Milkman

![The Milkman](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-09/0b37e1d6-b73a-4659-a602-838683648925/milking-man-.jpg)

- The Milkman makes two appearances in the play and is used to highlight Mrs. Johnstone’s financial situation.
- Firstly, he appears at the start of Act One with his message of **“no money, no milk”** in order to show the audience just how poor the Johnstones are.
- He appears again at the start of Act Two, this time full of joy and even taking Mrs. Johnstone out **“dancing”**, indicating to the audience that things have improved significantly for the Johnstone family since moving to the countryside.

### Teachers

![Teachers](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-04/af070b9d-db6a-4f81-90cf-828c5ef77cee/shutterstock_91877264.jpg)

- While Edward’s boarding school teacher and Mickey’s secondary modern school teacher seem stereotypical for their environments, both show a lack of understanding and empathy.
- They suspend the boys for relatively insignificant offences.
- The teachers don’t bother to understand the children and this could be a critique of the education system on the part of Willy Russell, who was himself a teacher.

## Test yourself on Minor Characters

- Who do the police favour in _Blood Brothers_?
- **“There’ll be no more bloody warnings from now on”**: Who is the policeman addressing?
- What does the milkman highlight?
