They symbolise the female reproductive organs. Atwood uses yonic imagery (relating to the female genitalia) to represent Offred's frustrations at her diminished role in society. She feels like she is nothing more than a vehicle for pregnancy. ### Tulips along the border ![Tulips along the border](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-11/586237ea-c1b7-4f11-8596-ba0ae8ad98b6/tulips-red-.jpg) - **"The tulips along the border are redder than ever, opening, no longer wine cups but chalices; thrusting themselves up, to what end?"** ### "Like teeth" !["Like teeth"](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-05/ae1fdc80-8f5c-4656-a986-b9d5d1a4bccb/smile-mouth-teeth-.png) - **"The tulips have had their moment and are now done, shedding their petals one by one, like teeth"** - This quotation references the Freudian theory _Vagina Dentata_, which is a male phobia that a woman's vagina could castrate a man's penis while he is penetrating her. - The references to __"teeth"__ and __"tulips"__ in this quotation reflect Offred's transgressive attitude towards her role in Gilead. She wishes she had the power to emasculate the patriarchal powers that control her. ### "Red of the smile" !["Red of the smile"](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-11/24c3de38-4ecc-4203-a841-973e31d8f661/smile-.jpg) - "The red of the smile is the same as the red of the tulips in Serena Joy's garden, towards the base of the flowers where they are beginning to heal. The red is the same but there is no connection.
