# Nick Carraway

English Lit: AQA A Level The Great Gatsby - Specification A, topic 4.1.1

## Background to Nick Carraway's Character

Nick Carraway is the narrator of the story.

### Location of Nick Carraway

![Location of Nick Carraway](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-08/3a58cded-1054-4a95-869f-5b12015aa44e/writer-typewriter.jpg)

- After fighting in World War I, he moved from his home in the Midwest to work in the world of finance in New York City.
- At the time of telling the story, Nick has moved back to the Midwest and has become a writer.

### Relationships

![Relationships](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-11/8e6412c7-0f06-4373-a645-eee017baa76a/long-island-.png)

- He is a distant cousin of Daisy Buchanan.
- While living in Long Island, he was Jay Gatsby’s next door neighbour.

## Nick Carraway - Old Money Connections

From the beginning of the story, Nick places himself in the __‘old money’__ section of society.

### Family wealth

![Family wealth](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-09/0c21261a-2a5a-4460-b848-127a8738eb25/cliffe-castle-wealth-.jpg)

- He reveals that he is from a __'prominent, well-to-do'__ family in America’s Midwest region.
- The family’s wealth comes primarily from a hardware business, which Nick’s father still runs.
- 'Old money' is fortunes dating from before the 19th century. 'New money' is recently acquired fortunes.

### Nick's experience in war

![Nick's experience in war](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-08/8193805c-a6ce-44db-8849-077c21c0e9fb/world-war-one-british-soldier.jpg)

- Despite a privileged upbringing, Nick did join the army and fight in World War I.
- This means he would been exposed to the cruelty of mankind at a young age, possibly saving him from becoming too sheltered like some of his privileged contemporaries.

### Dislike of West Egg

![Dislike of West Egg](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-11/c8f52e48-15ee-478e-a476-fcb437b310eb/thumb-down-.jpg)

- Nick’s refined background is clear through his initial dislike of West Egg.
 - West Egg and East Egg are two areas on Long Island.
- He considers West Egg to be __'the less fashionable of the two'__ (Chapter One), presumably because West Egg is the home to the __‘new money’__ class, while East Egg is where the __‘old money’__ people live.
- As such, Nick finds himself caught between the two worlds.

### Disapproval of new money world

![Disapproval of new money world](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/courseImages/physics/AQA%20New%20Modules/6.1.3/thumbs%20down.jpg)

- Nick is not used to the vast displays of extravagant wealth he encounters at Gatsby’s parties.
- In fact, at the end of the novel, he confesses that he __'disapproved of'__ (Chapter Eight) the __‘new money’__ world which Gatsby represented.

## Nick Carraway - Educated and Wise

Nick has benefitted from a good education having graduated from the prestigious Yale University, and Nick confesses that he was __'rather literary in college'__ (Chapter One).

### Poetic writing style

![Poetic writing style](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-09/4f30056e-a649-4336-ab08-8f618b345d9f/writing-.jpg)

- As well as the narrator of the story, Nick is a key character in it. Because he is telling the story as he is writing it, we learn a lot about him from the way he expresses himself.
- Nick’s writing style is often thoughtful and poetic, for example, his final comment about how __'we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past'__ (Chapter Nine) is equally beautiful and thought-provoking.

### Reflection on his finance aspirations

![Reflection on his finance aspirations](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-09/c63454e6-199d-4c50-8af4-e3d2da6238bb/money-coins.jpg)

- Because of this poetic style of expression, it is perhaps surprising that Nick was trying to make a name for himself in the world of finance, and perhaps this helps us to understand why he never really fitted into that world.

### Chooses words wisely

![Chooses words wisely](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2018-09/27b953cf-9db4-4813-bf60-7fb7d47b02b2/words-letters-.jpg)

- Nick considers himself to be __'unusually communicative in a reserved way'__ (Chapter One).
- This juxtaposition between being both __'communicative'__ and __'reserved'__ seems to suggest that Nick chooses his words wisely.
 - Juxtaposition is putting two contrasting words or ideas next to each other so the reader compares them.
