# Complete the Pair - Counting Example

11+ Non-Verbal Reasoning, topic 4.3.1

## Complete the Pair - Counting

Many of the questions you will be asked require you to count dots, lines, zig-zags, squares or any other part of an image.

### Question

![Question](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-06/8dc74c09-7a33-4072-a51d-38de1c594d84/Counting1-1.png)

- Does image A, B, C or D complete the pair?

### Start with the complete pair

![Start with the complete pair](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-06/ab25d062-f7ef-4a80-b88c-bb2ecfdccc03/Counting1-1a.png)

- The pattern in the first pair is the same as the pattern used to complete the second pair.

### Find the pattern

![Find the pattern](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-06/3ae8fe4f-a210-4c33-a960-32701b85b9aa/Counting1-1b.png)

- The only difference between the two images is the number of circles, so this is our pattern.
- The number of circles increases by 2 (from 3 to 5).

### Apply the pattern to the second pair

![Apply the pattern to the second pair](https://image-v2.cdn.app.senecalearning.com/2019-06/cc3ff2dd-71e7-4659-962d-94054eef93b5/Counting1-1c%20(1).png)

- Now we use the pattern of circles increasing by two to work out what would complete the second pair.

### Count the circles

### Follow the pattern

### Compare with shape D ❌

### Compare with shape B ✅

### Give the correct answer

- Shape B is the correct answer as the image contains six circles, following the pattern of increasing the number of circles by two.
