# Time-Related Problems

11+ Maths, topic 3.2.1

## Time-Related Problems

You may be asked a time-related problem question. The question will be written in full sentences, which you will need to read carefully.

### Example problem

- A film starts at 8.15pm and lasts for 90 minutes. 
- I arrive 10 minutes early and leave 10 minutes late (as I lose my scarf and search for it). 
- How long did I spend at the cinema altogether and what time did I leave?

### Work out how long

- To work out the time spent at the cinema, add the extra time spent arriving and leaving to the length of the film.
 - 90 + 10 + 10 = 110 minutes

- The film started at 8.15pm. To work out what time the film ended, add 90 minutes to 8.15pm.
 - 90 minutes is 1.5 hours, so the film ended at 9.45pm.
- I left the cinema 10 minutes late. 
 - This means that I left the cinema 10 minutes after 9.45pm.
   - I left the cinema at 9.55pm.

## Test yourself on Time-Related Problems

- A train journey is supposed to last 2.5 hours. The train leaves the station 15 minutes late and stops at another station for an extra 20 minutes. How long did the entire journey take?
